Hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) is a brominated flame retardant commonly used in industrial and household products to reduce the spread of fire and the risk of death. Similar to polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), HBCD is a ubiquitous and persistent environmental contaminant, highly lipophilic and bioaccumulative, and has been detected throughout various ecosystems and phyla, thus posing potential cause for concern for top consumer species, including birds of prey.
